Skating Tournament Brings Money to Cedar Rapids
You may have noticed a little extra traffic around Cedar Rapids this weekend. That’s because a big synchronized figure skating tournament is going on right now at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
The tournament attracted about 5,000 visitors to the area. And as you can imagine, that’s having a big impact.
The arena has been buzzing since mid-week, today are the finals as the teams compete to go to nationals, and then on to worlds.
But this year is the first time the Midwest and the pacific teams have held a joint tournament, making this the biggest tournament ever for US figure skating.
As Cedar Rapids works to build support for a convention center, events like this are helping build the brand and awareness of the city.
“You have thousands of people here that would not have ever come to Iowa in January,” said Patty Rich, a parent of a skater.
Tickets are still available for the rest of tonight’s shows. Tonight, it’s the college teams and the event runs until ten.
